River Arc
A memorable incident that took place within a unique environmental landscape became a visual metaphor, of affirmation for my work along river's bend in the Midwest. It was evening at Principia and I was perched out on the end of a limestone bluff, sometime before the summer solstice. The sun was setting into the low hills above Grafton, at the upriver terminus before the Mississippi turns north again and out of sight. As the sun dropped into the western horizon, I was overtaken by a broad full moon simultaneously breaking---ascending downriver to the east. It was a phenomenal, private occurrence that seemed to be such an example of harmony . . . the radiant appearance of two full orbs, their shafts of color streaming toward each other along the course of a calm and great river. It was a sustaining moment. Only years later it occurred to me that the event might be better explained through painting.
